My haul from the Toy Carnival: Ratchet, Sideways and Starscream

Went with some TF.SG members - Unicron Nemesis and kopikia to the Toy Carnival @ Singapore Art Museum yesterday, and it was certainly a fun-filled event with many of our local toy stores participating. I thought it was like a giant scale Sunday CSC Flea Market though, with many familiar faces such as Falcon Hangar, Rapid Culture, Simply Toyz etc there. There were goodies galore too, such as free comics for the adult collectors, and free popcorns and floss candy for the kids. And for the photo hunters, there was the 501st contingent in their Star Wars gear, ready to strike poses for anyone who wanted to 'shoot' them. I went with the intention to look for cheaper ROTF toys and I was certainly not disappointed as I managed to secure two voyager class - Starscream and Desert Tracker Ratchet, as well as one deluxe Sideways at very good prices. I wished I had gotten Demolishor and Megatron too, but their prices were only slightly lower than current market prices so I thought I'll bide my time for these two. :)

I attended the Midnight Toy Launch at Forum The Shopping Mall last Friday to show appreciation to Hasbro's support for TF.SG ROTF Fans Screening, as well as to distribute the goodie bags to our TF.SG members and I must admit I was utterly shocked by the huge turnout. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine thousands of Singaporeans thronging a shopping mall at midnight buying toys, but that was how the situation was like then. Madness.

I joined the queue around 8 plus in the evening with Grimlock bro and it was about 1030 when Toys R Us started their activities for the night with appearances by Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Starscream. Thereafter, there was also a TF-related quiz and I managed to get one of the questions correct for answering that the other name for G1 Jetfire was Skyfire. The prize I received was a TF Lanyard. There was also a speed transforming contest where the prize was a TF watch. A pity I didn't get the opportunity to participate in that.

When the countdown towards midnight approaches, there was an air of excitement and anticipation for shoppers outside the TRU store. Finally when the shutters went up, there was madness as everyone, young and old, rushed into the store and started sweeping toys off the shelves and into their shopping bags. Some of the shoppers were old hands and knew what were the hot faves, such that stocks of toys like Sideswipe, Sideways and The Fallen were quickly depleted in no time. Leader Class Prime was also a fave, but because of the plentiful supply and the prohibitive price tag, it was always available. With good fortune, I managed to secure The Fallen stacked neatly within the other voyager class items, and was beaming with pride when I overheard other shoppers mouthing in envy, "Hey, he's got The Fallen." I quickly paid for my items to avoid the queue that would soon form, and received a goodie bag consisting of an exclusive toy launch T-shirt, mug, guidebook, car decals etc. I then proceeded to distribute the complimentary jigsaw puzzles to our members and eventually only left the shopping mall around 2.30am, exhausted but thoroughly satisfied. :)

Transformers Universe Mighty Muggs

My Mighty Muggs

Mighty Muggs are a new line of new Urban Vinyl-style figures produced by Hasbro and feature collectors' favorite characters from Star Wars, Indian Jones, Marvel Comics, G.I. Joe and of course, Transformers. Depending on which series they are from, Mighty Muggs figures can be highly collectible and highly desirable. I was never a fan of Mighty Muggs until they released the Transformers Universe line with the first wave of Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee and Soundwave, followed by Starscream and the highly coveted Grimlock. I decided to collect just the Transformers line as there are simply too many characters produced already. Up next will be Jazz and Shockwave, which I am really looking forward to.

Animated Shockwave and Wreck-Gar

TFA Animated Shockwave, c-10

Representing his double nature in the cartoon, Animated Shockwave represents both the Autobot Longarm and Decepticon Shockwave, and features four distinct modes. In "Infiltration Mode," the shorter, stockier Autobot Longarm transforms into a four-legged crane platform. In "Spy Mode," he stretches and manipulates himself into the taller, lankier Decepticon Shockwave, as the crane portion of Longarm's body converts into a hand-held cannon. The symbol on his chest flips between Autobot and Decepticon symbols.

Wreck-Gar transforms into a garbage truck that looks just like "Weird Al" Yankovic he does in the show. He comes with slider-activated articulated lifting arms. He also comes with two translucent blue energy blades that can store in his canister, emerge at the sliding of another lever, and clip onto his forearms in two different configurations. He's very well articulated, including fingers jointed at the first knuckle, and his big feet make him easy to stand. He also has a facial expression that would not seem far out-of-place on Al himself. He doesn't have an Autobot Symbol on his chest, but he does have one on the left side of his cab in vehicle mode.

Deathsaurus - The Decepticon Emperor of Destruction

Release in 1989 as part of the Victory Series, the original Deathsaurus toy transformed into a nondescript dragon-lizard thing with wings (or giant mutant space chicken) that doesn't really look like anything except ugly. Unusually for post-Generation 1 toys, he has die-cast-metal feet in beast mode.

In robot mode, both of his Breast Animal components can be slotted inside his spring-loaded chest (or kaiju-mode back) to form his elaborate torso armor; Eaglebreast must go in first, then Tigerbreast added on top. Both Breast Animals can also become hand-held weapons. He is armed with a light blue laser rifle — which, despite what the boxart and cartoon would have you believe, does not have a removable flail— and a large shield constructed out of his tail that can mount on either bicep.

Because of its relatively large box size, it is hard to find Deathsaurus in the condition above. It took two months for the item to be finally delivered to my place, but it was definitely worth the wait.

I did my part to save the economy yesterday with my largest haul this year. I have been selling most of my vintage collection since the beginning of this year to make way for room space and to concentrate on the newer releases. Anyway, most of my pre-ordered stuff arrived yesterday so I went over to Falcon with some of my friends to pick up the items, which include the latest toys from the alternity series, the Henkei Ratchet and Inferno, and the wildly popular Disney Mickey Mouse Optimus Prime, which is apparently sold out in the streets in Japan. A friend who sold me his collection once told me "The joy of collecting toys lies in once owning the collection itself. When you finally sell off your collection for other pursuits, you should not have any regrets." I am a collector, and still is, as I can lay claim to the fact that my vintages were mostly sold at prices below what I paid for them, except for a few which I managed to recoup the cost price. With that, I bade farewell to some of my gems acquired over the years; Black Zarak, Grand Maximus, Superion, Raiden, Black Sixshot, Liokaiser. More will leave my collection in the months to come, and I can only hope they find another owner who recognise the joy they bring.

Dinobots (KO version)

Grimlock's toy was originally part of Takara's Diaclone Dinosaur Robo series. When Hasbro imported the toy in 1985 for the Transformers line, its blue pelvis was changed to red and the Diaclone driver mini-figure was dropped.
The original Grimlock changes from a robot into a robotic T-Rex and comes with a red energo-sword, a black double-barreled rifle, and a rocket launcher with three silver rockets.

Sludge was released as part of the second series of Transformers in 1985, transforming into a robotic "brontosaurus". He has a trio of silver rockets, a rocket launcher, a black gun, and a red sword. Like most Diaclone-era molds, Sludge also has a conspicuous driver compartment located in his chest.

Slag was released as part of the second series of Transformers in 1985. The toy transformed into a robotic Triceratops, and came with a missile launcher that could fit in the shoulder socket of both the robot and dinosaur, a red sword, a silver "electro blaster" and three silver rockets.

Snarl transforms from a robotic stegosaurus dinosaur bristling with gold vacuum-metalized armor plates, to a heavily armed robot armed with a red energo-blade, a smaller laser rifle and a rocket launcher with three black missiles.

misb KO Swoop, c-9.5

Swoop's toy transforms into a robotic pteranodon. Swoop can stand on his dinosaur feet or lie on his stomach in this mode, but additionally has fold-out wheels located in his feet and chest (though one has to split his chest open to access the latter wheel). His beak and tail were rounded for safety reasons compared to the original Diaclone release. However, the remolding of the tail kept the tail sticker from fitting correctly. Interestingly, despite being a former Diaclone toy, Swoop is the only Dinobot not to have an obvious cockpit for a Diaclone driver figure.
Swoop's die-cast metal chest is painted red, which is his Transformers color, as opposed to his cartoon color scheme which was based on the Diaclone toy. Along with his sword, he also comes with two spring-loaded missile launchers, the only Dinobot to have two projectile-launchers.

Swoop is notable for being one of the most fragile Generation 1 toys, and as such commands a respectable amount of money on the secondary market due to the difficulty in finding one intact.

Victory Saber

Released in 1989, the Victory Saber giftset is a two-pack of Star Saber and Victory Leo. In Victory Saber vehicle mode, Victory Leo transforms into a compacted version of his fighter mode and connects into the rear between Star Saber's engines/legs, forming a huge-ass space ship.
For Victory Saber robot mode, Victory Leo basically splits up into multiple parts, with most of Leo's body becoming platform shoes for Star Saber and the rest of him forming a giant backpack/weapons system. As Victory Saber, the Star Saber robot is armed with his sword, the backpack's weapons and Victory Leo's huge cannon, which can fire projectiles.

This Victory Saber giftset was purchased from an online seller based in Japan with the help from a friend. It came in a very good box with its content in even better condition.

Jetfire - Air Guardian

Released in 1985, a Takatoku Macross VF-1S Super Valkyrie box set was repainted, repackaged, and released as Jetfire. Jetfire features three modes: robot, jet, and an "alternate transformation" that deploys his arms and legs in jet mode. Additionally, Jetfire comes with several red pieces of armor and rocket booster backpack that can snap onto his arms, legs, and back in any mode. Due to his Macross origins, Jetfire has considerably more articulation than the other Transformers in the line at the time.

However, Jetfire was never released in Japan, since the toy was released by one of Takara's rival toy companies, Bandai, which owned Takatoku's Valkyrie Fighter license and had told Hasbro that they could only sell the Jetfire character in the U.S. but not in Japan. Thus, there was never a Takara-issued Jetfire.

Jetfire is one of the TFs I coveted because of his amazing accessories and armor, as well as a gorgeous jet mode. It was thanks to Grimlock bro that I managed to secure this piece from an online ebay seller and at a pretty decent price too. Though it came in a box which has obviously seen much better days, the toy itself is in excellent condition with all the 11 pieces of battle armor complete.

Toy Collection Charity Drive on 14th Dec at CSC

This year, TF.SG will be organising a toy donation drive, with the beneficiary being Touch Young Arrows (TYA), under its parent organisation Touch Community Services. Some background information on TYA is as follows.

TYA believes that children can be nurtured and sharpened like arrows to make a positive impact in society, and to be future leaders in the community. TYA aims to realise the potential of children from single-parent or low-income families through a series of activities such as tuition, mentoring and sharing, art and craft lessons, indoor and outdoor games, outings and camps. TYA runs these activities on Saturdays at 10 centres in Bedok, Bendemeer, Clementi, Hougang, Marine Parade, Mountbatten, Queenstown, Serangoon, Tampines and Yishun. Some of the children who were in the pioneer programme some 15 years ago have returned to the club as volunteers to mentor the younger ones.

This coming sunday, 14th Dec, TF.SG will be having a toy collection drive to collect toys for these needy children, estimated to be around 250-300 children and from the age range of 7 - 12 years old. Admin team members from TF.SG, including myself, will gather at Spinelli's Coffee at China Square Central, from 3pm to 4pm to collect all donated toys, so anyone who has playable toys in good used and unused condition that you no longer want, please be generous in coming forward to donate them. We will consolidate all the collected toys and pass them to the person-in-charge on the following saturday, 20th Dec. I would like to make an appeal to everyone to come forward to make this a special christmas for these needy kids. Thanks once again. :)

Constructicons Unite!

The Constructicons and their super-robot mode, Devastator

Long Haul desires to be a front line fighter instead of a transport specialist, but recognizes his important role in the Autobot-Decepticon conflict. As the second strongest Constructicon after Bonecrusher, his ability to carry large loads, coupled with the powerful dual heat seeking missile launcher he wields in his attack vehicle mode, make him a dangerous adversary.

misb Scrapper, c-10

Scrapper is the leader of the formidable Constructicons. As such, Megatron values Scrapper's ability to organize his unit in order to assemble nearly any structure the Decepticons require. Scrapper's viciousness toward the Autobots make him quite popular among his Decepticon cronies. He forms the right leg of Devastator.

misb Hook, c-10

Hook's intelligence and skill are the result of his elitist personality, and he simply cannot tolerate unprofessionalism and lack of perfection-qualities important fot this Decepticon equivalent of a doctor/surgeon. He forms the head and shoulders of Devastator.

misb Mixmaster, c-10

Mixmaster is very skilled at his function; to the extent that his superiors are often surprised by the products he can almost "magically" procure while creating materials for the superstructures that the talented Constructicons made infamous.

misb Scavenger, c-10

Scavenger is a moving shovel on a rotating base. His robot mode looks odd, and he has the most purple colouring of all Constructicons.

misb Bonecrusher, c-10

Bonecrusher is the strongest of the six Constructicons, and his battle prowess and ability to demolish fortifications makes him popular among his Decepticon comrades. His robot and vehicle mode are quite excellent, and in vehicle mode, his extra Devastator parts can be used to create an attack vehicle mode.

Released in 1985, Devastator is the combination of the six constructicons; Team Leader Scrapper, Hook, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, Mixmaster and Scavenger.
Devastator's forearms are also spring-loaded missile launchers, able to fire his fists as well as his drill attachments, though the springs were severely weakened in the US for safety reasons. He also comes armed with a large purple laser rifle. Hook and Scavenger's pistols can also be easily added to him for a little extra firepower. While the others' pistols can be added as well, they're not in very useful positions. Unlike the later Scramble City-style combiners, Devastator's limbs cannot be rearranged into any other configurations. Although the Constructicons were produced in large quantities, and is one of the easiest combiners to find on the secondary market, they are always in demand and readily snatched up by casual and die-hard TFs fans alike as they were the most easily identifiable of all Transformers combiners.

Slag

Released in 1985, Slag was part of the second series of Transformers. I've always had a keen interest in the dinobots, but it's really not easy to find them in their boxes. I'm certainly glad my patience has paid off with the acquisition of one member of the dinobots. Slag comes in excellent condition, sealed in a c-9.5 box.

Darkwings giftset

Darkwings is formed by combining the individual toys of Hydra and Buster, both released in 1988. Once their Godmaster engines are plugged in, the two jets can be combined to form a single "superjet". A special multi-pack containing both Hydra and Buster was released in Japan. The two toys are identical to their normal-retail individual releases.

Twincast and Soundblaster

The first Blaster toy was redecoed as Twincast in 1987 and had its tape-door retooled in order to accommodate two cassettes at once. The clear-plastic part of the door was also changed to clear-red, so when certain cassettes were placed inside, the "secret plans" decals on them would reveal the "weak point" of either Fortress Maximus or Scorponok, much like using the tech-specs decoders. He came with Steeljaw, who was given one of these new decals.
In 2006, Twincast was also reissued as an e-Hobby exclusive, this time packaged with the new character Flip Sides.

mib unused Soundblaster, c8.5

As part of the Japanese Headmasters series, Soundwave was redecoed and retooled in 1987 so that he could hold two Cassettes in his chest at once. Soundblaster's tape door was cast in transparent red plastic to allow the information on the "readout" decal, unique to the Headmasters decos of the cassettes, to be seen, functioning in the same manner as the Tech Specs decoders. The readouts of the Decepticon cassettes showed the "weak points" of Fortress Maximus. Soundblaster came packaged with Buzzsaw.
Soundblaster was also reissued in the Transformers Collection series in 2005, packaged together with Buzzsaw and Ravage. This mold was used for all future reissues of Soundwave, since the original Soundwave mold is broken, and they mostly just have a single tape door to let it look more like Soundwave, yet they still feature the more exposed buttons on the bottom of Soundwave's chest door.

A combiner basically refers to a group of Transformers that assemble and combine their bodies into a single machine, or that composite machine itself. Most combiners form a larger Super Robot with its own unique personality (a character in its own right), but other varieties of combiner exist, forming vehicles, weapons, or other items. Combiners tend to be considerably larger and more powerful than the average Transformer, equivalent to strategic-grade weapons.
In identifying my G1 combiners wishlist, I kept to combiners with three or more members, which meant that popular characters like God Ginrai and Victory Saber were not included. I have also left out the Beastwars, Micromaster-type and Maximus-type combiners. With that, I came up with a list of 14 G1 combiners, which I finally completed with the recent acquisition of Menasor.

Unreleased "VSA" set (Superion vs Menasor)

Released in 1986, Menasor is a combination of the five Stunticons; Team Leader Motormaster, Drag Strip, Dead End, Wildrider and Breakdown. Menasor is formed by transforming Motormaster into his torso mode, attaching a chest plate/scout car, waist armor and mask on him, then connecting the other Stunticons into the appropriate limb slots in Motormaster's arms and legs. Fists and feet are then attached to the limbs. He is armed with Motormaster's sword and cyclone rifle. The Stunticons were available both individually or in a complete box set available in numerous markets. Menasor is also the smallest of the Scramble City-type combiners in the Generation 1 toyline. A Japanese "VSA" set with Superion (see 1st pic) was planned but unreleased.

The acquisition of Menasor meant that I have finally fulfilled my wish of owning all 14 G1 combiners, which I have identified at the beginning of my toy quest. Although the box has flap crease and some shelf wear, it stands firm and comes in mib unused condition, which was what made me decide to get it in the end even though it came with a hefty price tag. Ultimately, I guess I have finally lost patience in my relentless and at times tiring search for it. I take this opportunity to thank all those who have assisted me to complete my G1 combiners wishlist. :)

Road Caesar

Road Caesar is the combined form of the Brainmasters, namely Blacker, Laster and Braver, making him a rare non-Scramble City style of combiner. Road Caesar is a perfect combination of his component members, showing the responsibility and skill of Blacker, the intelligence of Braver, and the guts of Laster.

I bought the above set from an online seller in Japan. The item comes in a pristine c-9.5 box, mib unused condition with no flap crease and very minor shelfwear.

Figure King Exclusive Black Sixshot

My eagerly anticipated Black Sixshot finally arrived at my doorstep yesterday. Limited to 10 pieces worldwide when it was released in 2002, this special all-black version of Sixshot was made as a March Lucky Draw prize in Figure King Magazine in Japan. Black Sixshot is a coveted item which has seldom appeared on auction sites such as eBay and Yahoo Japan. In terms of exclusivity, it is definitely comparable to the Clear Version Sixshot, also a March Lucky Draw prize by Hyper Hobby Magazine in Japan.

I chanced upon Black Sixshot while I was browsing through the Yahoo Japan auction site, and was immediately tempted to get it. After an intense bidding war among several bidders, I finally managed to secure the piece at the very last minute just as the auction was about to close. Thereafter, it was an anxious wait for the item to be shipped to Singapore, and when it arrived, I practically tore the package apart to reveal the gem inside. It was deja vu once more, as I experienced the same excitement when Shockwave came. Black Sixshot came in its normal reissue box, with no slightest hint of the content within. I have already ordered a custom-made acrylic case to display it in its full glory.

Landcross

The original version of Landcross was available both as a giftset and separately as Wingwaver, Dashtacker, and Machtackle, although the individual robots were never sold separately. In addition to transforming separately into robot and vehicle modes and combining into Landcross, the six toys could also be combined in two-robot pairs, with one robot forming the head, upper torso, and arms and the other forming the lower torso and legs. The six robots' guns could be combined into a single large weapon. I bought my Landcross giftset from a seller based in Japan, who offered it to me at a pretty reasonable price. With the acquisition of Landcross, I am down to my last two combiners to complete my dream list of 14 combiners.

Chara Hobby Exclusive Stuntron Wildrider

An exclusive item from the "Chara Hobby 2008" show in Japan in 2008, Wildrider is a redeco of Classics Rodimus with a very vaguely Wildrider-inspired color scheme (but retaining all of Henkei Rodimus' paint applications, including the flames), transforming into a Dome Zero concept car. His rear "thruster" fires a spring-loaded missile, and the back section can be flipped up to turn it into a roof-mounted weapon. The thruster becomes a hand-held blaster in robot mode, and can also be mounted on his back as a "jetpack". His left arm hides a flip-out (non-spinning) buzzsaw.

Among the few exclusive released Henkei TFs so far, I rate Wildrider very highly because of its rarity and mystique, and I feel it even eclipses the highly sought-after Crystal Convoy. It is also an item that I have been looking for for some time, but have been repeatedly put off by the prohibitive price tag placed on it. However, seeing that the value of it seem destined to soar in future, I decided to get one at the most reasonable price from a local seller.

TFCC exclusive Piranacon

After weeks of anticipation, I finally collected my Transformers Collectors' Club exclusive Piranacon giftset today. I had pre-ordered it from a forum member at sgcollect who was doing a mail order for the item. Apart from collecting the toy, I'm also glad to have known another friend who shares the same passion as me. We also spent some time just chatting about TFs before another buyer came along to collect his set.

A redeco of the Generation 1 mold, Timelines Piranacon was available exclusively as an Official Transformers Collectors' Club-exclusive giftset containing all six Seacons in new color schemes. This set, unlike the original US giftset, also includes Nautilator. An estimated 1500 sets were produced to cater to the worldwide demand. Finally succumbed to the temptation of getting some Animated TFs today. Was browsing around while waiting for stephenusprime bro to turn up when I saw boxed Animated TFs going at 35 SGD each. Imagine the loose figures going at around 30 SGD currently as well, which simply meant I wasn't about to pass this chance. Moreover, the sale items included Grimlock, which I have wanted to get for some time already, as well as the recently released Blitzwing and Skywarp. I gave Optimus Prime and Lugnut a miss however. Utoys was also having their own version of the great singapore sale and many items were going at knockdown prices. In no time, I had already bought reissue C-372 Star Convoy (50 SGD) and Masterpiece G1 Starscream (60 SGD). Panic-stricken, I quickly msged stephenusprime to ask if he was arriving anytime soon as I was worried I might add to my two bags full of toys. Fortunately, he arrived in the nick of time to prevent me from having to survive on bread for the rest of the week. I also met up with three other members from TFSG; Novaprime, Jingjie and Redrum and we had a nice chat at Spinelli's, after which Stephenusprime came over to my place to collect the TFC set I am selling to him. As usual, I am happy when I buy toys and sad when I have to sell them, especially when my TFC set has been with me for more than two years already. Nevertheless, the vacuum created from the sale of 22 boxes of toys simply means more space for new ones coming soon. I also un-misb my Animated TFs and spent some time getting them in various poses for a photo-taking session.

Bought the two Henkei (meaning "Transform") seekers Skywarp and Thundercracker from Falcon today, which are actually exclusive items from Japan Ganbo Store & Toy Hobby Market. There was quite a huge crowd at the store as there were other items released today, such as BT-22 Convoy and MP-06, just to name a few. These two seekers are actually repaints of Starscream, which was earlier released as D-02 in the series. Together with Starscream, they complete my seeker collection, while I source the market out in the meantime for other previously issued Henkeis at reasonable prices. :)

One can attach Abominus's chest plate onto his shoulder in robot mode. Hun-Gurr combines with his fellow Terrorcons to form Abominus, serving as the super-robot's torso.

Abominus is the combined form of the five Terrorcons: Team Leader Hun-Gurrr, Rippersnapper, Blot, Sinnertwin and Cutthroat. As a Scramble City combiner, each smaller Terrorcon attach as limbs into the central body, Hun-Gurrr. He is completed by attaching fists, feet, a large chestplate, head and is armed with Hun-Gurrr's rifle. Abominus is perhaps the most posable of the Generation 1 combiners, as he can swing his legs forward and backward as well as to the side, and also has knees. Released in 1987, this giftset was only available in Italy and Japan. The box is well-protected in a custom-made acrylic case.

An e-Hobby exclusive, this toy is a redeco of the Generation 1 Omega Supreme toy. Using the same tooling as the Encore reissue Omega, this toy features the same retooled head.
The Guardian robot transforms into three individual components simultaneously: a large rocket base, a rocket and a tank. Not unlike the Seekers, whose toys involve minimal actual transformation and more "pull all the bits off and put them back on in different ways," the Guardian robot involves next to no actual manipulation of the parts, "transforming" instead by being disassembled into its component pieces, which are then put back together in a different configuration.
I collected my preordered Guardian Robot from Falcon earlier in the evening and this time, it took me quite a while to find a box in decent condition as the four-box carton resulted in the boxes packed tightly against one another. With the filmsy carton box protection, box dents and wear seem almost guaranteed. One of the features I like most about Guardian robot is its box artwork design (by Hidetsugu Yoshioka), which is distinctly different from the encore Omega Supreme design. And it also comes with a pair of Autobot and Decepticon sticker sheets and a collector's comic. Although it doesn't come cheap, the value of the toy seems likely to soar in time to come. :)

Tiring day at the Transformers.SG booth at CSC today. The crowd turnout was unusually poor today, though I must be thankful I managed to sell two of the items I brought along. I also ended up buying the latest TF releases Henkei Sunstreaker and Prowl, main reason being the cartoon box artwork, which I really like. I wonder why Takaratomy didn't put such artwork for the rest of the previous Henkei releases. I would have bought the whole lot. Apart from Bro Grimlock, who came to pick me up in the morning, Bro Slang, Stephenusprime and Skipjack also joined us at the booth today. I must admit that I do feel a little sad knowing that this is our final booth session already, but I am delighted to have known many new collector friends through my three sessions at the booth. We are also exploring the possibility of having a TFSG members gathering during Nov or Dec, and I tot that's really exciting. :)

Some of the toys featured include my all-time favourite Sixshot, as well as popular characters like Overlord, Scorponok, Fortress Maximus, Raiden and Predaking etc. A must watch for all Transformers fans. :)

First released in 1986, and as Encore number 12 in 2008, Metroplex transforms from a large robot to a multi-leveled "city" mainly for use with the smaller Generation 1 toys. This mode includes a service bay with launching mechanism, a helipad, and "parking" for six vehicles in whatever his legs fold out to be. He also has a third mobile battle station mode; a more compact wheeled form that incorporates his many weapons. Metroplex comes with Six-Gun, Slammer, and Scamper; the first two formed various parts of Metroplex's alternate modes.

Metroplex has a high degree of interactivity with other toys confirmed as part of it, namely, the Aerialbots, Stunticons, Protectobots and Combaticons. Each of the smaller "limb" robot from these four groups (while those that came after using their basic design, like the Technobots, Terrorcons and Seacons) can plug into ports in Metroplex's shoulders and knees in robot mode. Additionally, the base modes of the four leaders, Silverbolt (Superion), Hot Spot (Defensor), Motormaster (Menasor), and Onslaught (Bruticus), can connect to him in city mode.

I collected my pre-ordered Metroplex yesterday from Falcon. Was expecting a two-box carton but instead saw that it was a six-box carton with the boxes packed tightly against one another. A big box item like Metroplex means choosing one in very good condition is always going to be difficult but surprisingly, I took less than five minutes to find one in near perfect condition. Storage is going to be a problem though, so I'll be looking to clear some room space by selling some of my vintages at the final booth session this Sunday at CSC. Interested vintage collectors mustn't miss this opportunity to add to their collection as I am letting go of them at reasonable prices. Had another very fulfilling session helping out at the Transformers.SG booth at CSC today. Bro Grimlock and Slang came to pick me up at my place in the morning before we headed towards CSC. Slang had even made an impressive looking banner (seen in the pictures above) which was both eye-catching and very professionally done. Although the crowd turnout today cannot be compared to last week, we still managed to introduce the website to many people who walked past, as well as to meet existing Transformers.SG members who dropped by to say hi or place their orders for the polo tees. Thanks to bro stephenusprime and victorysabervictorysaber who came in the afternoon, we also had a wide array of TFs items for sale, besides the polo tees and display items. These guys sure know their stuff and when we were not promoting the website to passers-by, we were chatting eagerly amongst ourselves and sharing information about TFs. I also managed to sell some of the items I brought along, which I will chalk off my Toys for Sales list shortly. Admittedly, these were also items I was reluctant to let go, but because I needed to clear space for some soon-to-arrive items, I had little choice. I bid farewell to my Reissue Sixshot, Commemorative Ultra Magnus and BT Laserwave, and hope they are now in the safe hands of collectors who will treasure them. We also took some group shots before we packed up for the day, and I really like the photos taken. We have very good rapport within the team, and I hope we can maintain this friendship in time to come. :)

Autobot Headmasters - Chromedome, Hardhead and Brainstorm

Chromedome is equipped with two non-firing laser rifles which can be mounted in both modes (either in the robot-mode fists or on the rear of the vehicle), and a hood-mounted 'infrared red range-finder' which is the socket for his Headmaster Stylor.

Hardhead transforms into a Cybertronian self-propelled artillery gun. He can store his rifles in 5mm peg holes in his vehicle mode, and his Headmaster, Duros, can ride inside his cockpit. Duros transforms into his head, which, when attached to Hardhead's robot mode, activates a simplified, spring-loaded Tech Spec meter hidden under a panel on his chest.

Brainstorm transforms into a turquoise Cybertronic fighter craft. Both of Brainstorm's twin pistols attach to the front of his alt-mode's nosecone to extend it and augment it with two canard wings. As with all larger Headmaster toys, Brainstorm features both a cockpit suitable for his partner, Arcana, to sit in and an abbreviated Tech Specs bar graph inside his chest hidden under a hinged panel.

I bought all three Autobot Headmasters, which were released in 1987, from a local collector letting go of his collection at reasonable prices. He had previously owned the coveted Decepticon pair of Apeface and Snapdragon, as well as Highbrow (which would have allowed me to complete a running order from C-101 to 104) but a pity they were since sold to another collector. Nevertheless, I consider this a good acquisition due to the relatively good condition of the boxes, which are still glossy and come with sharp edges, rated c-8.5 only due to the flap creases.

Helped out at the Transformers.SG booth at CSC last sunday together with Grimlock bro and I must admit that while it was extremely tiring, it turned out to be a fulfilling day in terms of meeting new acquaintances, from new TFs converts to the super hard core fans (One even spots an autobot tattoo near his ankle area).

For the booth, I also brought along two of my combiners giftsets for display at the booth and several items from my personal collection to sell at the booth. Grimlock bro also brought along his vintage Road Caesar giftset and Powermaster Optimus Prime, and he has had to entertain numerous queries about his vintages from interested buyers even though he kept emphasising it was for display only. :) I guess I wasn't so keen in the selling part, and was more interested in talking to people about their TFs collection and interests, promoting the website, and of cos getting them to own a piece of the exclusive Transformers.SG polo tee designed by one of our members.

Overall, I really like my first experience selling stuff at a booth in CSC. I have often wondered how it would be like to manage a booth at CSC during my weekend visits there, and although there were some attempts at getting my friends to share a booth with me to sell our stuff, our plans never did materialise. So, I am really grateful and appreciative to Grimlock bro for inviting me to help out. For everyone's information, the booth will be on for the next three sundays (14th, 21st and 28th), and I have already put my name in the hat to help out again. Really looking forward to meeting more like-minded collectors at the booth. Will also be bringing more of my stuff to sell. Grotusque

Released in 1987, Grotusque transforms into a robotic winged sabertooth tiger. Pressing a button on the back of his beast-mode neck also results in "cold" sparks shooting from his mouth, which opens and closes. His "Vaporator" weapon can also mount on his beast-mode back.

I bought Grotusque from a fellow collector who was letting go of his vintage TF collection. I am also currently in negotiation with him to secure three other Autobot Headmasters. Grotusque comes wrapped in clear plastic and in very good box condition (easily c-9+) with no flap crease.

Released in 1989, Victory Leo transforms into a black, yellow and white winged lion robot. Both modes are dominated by the missile-firing V-Lock Rifle that rises from his back between his wings in alternate mode, or plugs into his hip in robot mode. Victory Leo can also combine with Star Saber to become Victory Saber, which was available as a giftset.

Victory Leo comes in pristine condition, box and toy-wise. Perhaps the only blemish is that the stickers have been half-applied. That was the main reason why I deliberated on getting it earlier even though I had been tracking it for some time already. Nevertheless, I finally decided to get it due to the excellent box and toy condition. Now my Star Saber has finally found its perfect companion. :)

Sixshot - Vintage vs Reissue

With the reissue of Sixshot in 2002, owning its vintage version may have become a low priority for many collectors. I must admit I shared the same feeling too as I hunted for the reissue version. At one time, I even own two reissues, one in a better box condition which I have since sold to a friend. It was actually a lucky find for me in getting my vintage sixshot as I was in fact collecting another toy when my seller friend asked if I might be interested in vintage sixshot. I thought there's no harm taking a look since I'm a huge fan of sixshot. It certainly came as a pleasant surprise when I saw that the box condition was even better than my current reissue version. Most importantly, the price offered by my friend was very reasonable, much less than what I had expected to pay. So now, it sits mighty inside my display cabinet.

I also decided to make a comparison of the differences between the two and apparently, there were only slight but pretty obvious differences. You may want to click on the photos to get a clearer view. If you look carefully at the front box cover, you can see the absence of the 'reissue' black label (bottom centre) on the vintage. Further, the Takara logo at the bottom right hand corner is much bigger for the vintage compared to its resissue counterpart.

Moving to the back of the boxes, the vintage includes robot points, which is absent for the resissue. The robot artwork designs on the bottom left corner are also different. Moreover, the vintage contains the specs table of sixshot, which cannot be found on the reissue. Finally, the vintage was actually made in Japan, while the reissue was made in China, most likely to cut down on production costs. That's about all I can spot at the moment. :)

Defensor

Released in 1986, Defensor is the combined form of the five Protectobots: Team Leader Hot Spot, Blades, First Aid, Groove and Streetwise. Being a Scramble-City style combiner means any of the smaller Protectobots can serve as any limb; however, the "correct" configuration has Blades and First Aid as arms, and Groove and Streetwise as legs. Defensor was available as the individual Protectobots sold separately, or as a giftset, and its mold was later redecoed into Guard City.

I am very grateful towards a fellow collector, Eric for helping me find the Defensor giftset in Japan. He actually messaged me while he was in Japan and went out of his way to find this gem of a set, which is mib unused with unapplied stickers. The box is extremely mint with barely noticeable creases. Definitely one of the better sets I have seen in comparison to those listed on online auctions.

Dinoking

Dinoking is the combination of all six Dinoforce warriors: Leader Gōryū, Kakuryū, Gairyū, Yokuryū, Rairyū and Doryū. With the bodies and minds of all six members combined into one, he is the top Decepticon when it comes to mindless violence. Released exclusively in Japan in 1989, Dinoking was sold as his individual components and as a giftset. He is a redeco of Monstructor.

I had actually been hunting for Dinoking for quite some time already. Although I have had the opportunity to get it when it was available at times, I decided against getting those sets either due to missing flaps, poor box condition, and of cos its hefty price tag. I bought my Dinoking giftset from an online seller at a pretty good price. The box is in very good condition, rated c-8.5 only because of a slight tear on the bottom right corner. Another great addition to my combiners collection.

Henkei Crystal Convoy was the 2008 Tokyo Toy Show exclusive item, with production limited to 1000 pieces and sold out on the first day worldwide. I managed to secure this piece at a reasonable price from a seller on sgcollect. Although I have not collected a single item from the Henkei series, I really liked Crystal Convoy when I first saw it on display at one of the toy shops in CSC. The box is in immaculate condition and bubble-wrapped when I collected it, and I intend to keep it that way.

Devastator

Devastator is the bizarre combination of the constructicons: Team Leader Scrapper, Hook, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, Mixmaster and Scavenger. Released in 1985, this six-robot giftset were made available in many markets, including the US, Japan, and several European countries. Devastator's forearms are also spring-loaded missile launchers, able to fire his fists as well as his drill attachments. He also comes armed with a large purple laser rifle. Hook and Scavenger's pistols can also be easily added to him for a little extra firepower. While the others' pistols can be added as well, they're not in very useful positions. Unlike the later Scramble City-style combiners, Devastator's limbs cannot be rearranged into any other configurations.
Devastator was purchased online with the help of my friend, Jeff, who helped me greatly in the bidding of the toy. Apart from the usual shelfwear for vintage boxes, the box is generally in good condition. Another great addition to my combiners collection.

Finally managed to secure BT-17 Black Convoy, which was available exclusively in Japan at the Winter Wonder Festival in 2007 and limited to 800 pieces worldwide. Compared to its alternator counterpart Nemesis Prime, Black Convoy has die-cast metal parts and most of his truck body panels are coated in gloss black paint. This was truly a rare piece and of course, came with a hefty pricetag placed on it. After some negotiation with the seller, I finally decided on getting it, together with Alternators Ravage and Rumble.

A pleasant surprise awaits while I was browsing through the forum pages of sgcollect this afternoon, to find myself mentioned in a favourable light by a fellow sgcollect member. This was what stephanusprime wrote:

Grade Description of Liokaiser

Liokaiser is the combined form of the Breastforce: Team Leader Leozack, Drillhorn, Gaihawk, Hellbat, Jarugar, and Killbison, an elite combat team consisting of land and air assault vehicles. Released only in Japan in 1989, Liokaiser is a unique and highly sought-after combiner. Unlike most other combiners, Liokaiser's feet and hands are built into the component robots. Only his combined-mode head is a separate accessory; even his hand-weapon is assembled from Killbison and Jarugar's extra weapons.

I bought Liokaiser from a local seller who was letting go of his vintage collection some time last year. Truly a rare find as this is an Action Figure Authority (AFA) graded toy and has achieved a high grade of 90. It now sits magnificently on top of my main display shelf beside its chief nemesis, Star Saber.

My Binaltech Collection

The Binaltech series is a line of Transformers that started in late 2003. The toys in this series transform into fully-licensed, 1:24-scale accurate representations of real cars from automobile manufacturers around the globe, complete with opening doors, hoods, trunks, plus "realistic" open driver/passenger compartments. I bought the above set from a local collector who was selling it at a discounted rate as he had to make space for his other collections. In fact, there was another collector who was enquiring about the set the same time as me, though I must admit I acted pretty fast in clinching the deal once I saw that the boxes were in very good condition. I'm currently short of BT-17 and BT-18 (may have to pay a princely sum to acquire them), as well as the soon-to-be released BT-21 and BT-22, to complete the entire set.

Just been to the STCC 2008 at Suntec City this morning to check if there are any good buys and I must admit I left feeling very satisfied with my purchases. I had actually gone yesterday too around 6 plus in the evening, and although I was very impressed with the static displays of popular manga cartoons and the huge collection of vintage Star Wars figurines on display, there were almost no traces of transformers, except for the current animated series, which does not interest me at all. I was also looking for Falcon's booth but couldn't find it anywhere in the exhibition hall. I decided I had to come early today so that I don't miss out on any good deals.

True enough, there were transformers aplenty for the early birds, and I also managed to find Falcon's booth soon after I entered the hall. First things that caught my eye were the reissue Sixshot and victory Blacker. No hesitation with Sixshot as I have always been looking for a spare piece, but I decided against getting Blacker somehow. It was quickly snapped by another customer the moment I put it down. I also bought several alternators that were being sold on the shelves; Shockblast, Swindle and Silverstreak. Somehow, I am beginning to like the alternator series a lot as I think they make great display pieces in their boxes compared to the binaltechs. And they are much cheaper too. To top up a good day, I also bought the TRU exclusive Superconvoy at a discounted price.

Fort and Grand Maximus

As a redeco of Fortress Maximus, Grand Maximus shares the title of largest Transformer toy from Generation 1. Grand Maximus transforms from robot, to city, to battleship. In all modes, Maximus has a wide array of pop-out guns and gimmicks. His left leg hides a small prison cell, and he has a swing-out cannon/helipad. His right leg has a small storage compartment. His torso has a gear-activated spinner for the detachable radar array accessory, a "control socket" for Grand's "communcations tower" mode, and a working elevator that can lift small toys up to the central ramp to be launched in his altmodes. Each arm had a long ramp on the back with sliding launchers for small vehicles.

Grand Maximus' head can be removed and transformed into a robot called Grand. This component also transforms into a communications room that combines with Grand Maximus' city and battleship modes. Grand can additionally fit inside an included pretender shell. This shell, unlike most other Autobot shells, was robotic in appearance rather than human. Grand's head can also be removed and transformed into a smaller robot, known as Gran. Two smaller vehicles, Koka and Onomus, fit into the toe areas of the Brave Maximus robot. They can combine into the robot Cog.

This toy comes mint in sealed box, with the box in very good condition, at least a c-9.

Released in 1987, Fortress Maximus is, by far, the largest Transformers toy ever produced. In robot mode, it stands 22" (or 56 cm) tall, nearly 8" (20 cm) taller than its in-fiction rival Scorponok. The toy has multiple alternate mode configurations, transforming into a relatively compact "city" mode, and also a secondary mode described as a "battle station."
In all modes, Fortress Maximus has a wide array of pop-out guns and gimmicks. Its left leg hides a small prison cell, plus has a swing-out cannon/helipad. Its right leg has a small storage compartment. This Japanese version of Fortress Maximus comes with a pair of swords; one for Fortress and a larger one for Maximus. I bought both Fortress Maximus and its younger brother, Grand Maximus from the same seller, who offered both to me at a special discounted price. The items are misb and rated at least c-9, which is extremely difficult to find anywhere currently. Although there have been Fortress and Grand Maximuses offered at lower prices on the secondary market, incompleteness of toy contents and disappointing box conditions are huge turnoffs for me.

Finally back from my vacation trip to Hong Kong/ China. Apart from visiting my relatives in China, it hasn't been a fruitful toy hunting trip, and my only vintage Transformers buy was C-309 Godbomber. I had chanced upon it at one of the basement toy shops in CTMA Centre (near Mongkok MTR), a building with several levels filled with toys shops selling all sorts of toys. I noticed that the box is in good condition so I asked the owner if he could take it out of the display cabinet for inspection. There was the usual shelf wear and a slight tear on the left flap, but otherwise, the box was at least a c-8.5. After some negotiation over the price, I decided to get it. However, there were precious little that caught my eye after that. A piece of good news: I am on my way to completing my combiners collection with the acquisitions of the vintage Devastator and Predaking giftsets. Will be posting pictures of them once I've collected from the sellers.

Star Saber

Released in 1989, Star Saber transforms into a large red, blue and white Cybertronic spacecraft and a base. Star Saber also has the ability to merge in either jet or robot mode with Victory Leo to form Victory Saber. I chanced upon Star Saber today as I passed by CSC this afternoon while on my way to Chinatown to exchange some HK dollars for my trip tomorrow. I wasn't expecting to get anything; more to do some window shopping since I won't be going to CSC for the next two weeks. As I passed by one of the toy stores, I suddenly saw the impressive looking Star Saber in one of the display cabinets, and the best thing is that the box looked in solid condition. At least a c-9, probably some creases and shelf wear at the back and bottom of the box, I thought. I decided to ask the owner for its selling price and whether I could take the box out to check. The owner then quoted me an unbelievably attractive price. The only thing left now was the box condition. As I checked the box thoroughly, I found out that apart from minor shelfwear, there were no box creases at all, at least a c-9.5. It was also a consignment item, meaning someone had entrusted the store to sell it on his behalf, so there was no negotiation of price (not that I needed to anyway). It's also nice to hear from the owner that the item only came in yesterday evening, and that it will definitely be sold to some toy hunter during the sunday flea market tomorrow had I not seen it today. :)

After several days of intense packing of my room and major relocation of books and toys, I have finally arranged all my Transformers collection on my bookshelf , shifted all my books to another room, and also set up my detolf shelves to showcase some of my TF vintage collection. The above photos feature my prized Transformers collection, which include popular collectors' items like Fortress and Grand Maximus, Black Zarak, Overlord, Browning, Trypticon, Shockwave and my combiners collection. I am deeply grateful to my dad, who spent his rest time in the evening helping me set up the display shelves. Seeing the final display makes me feel that the time and effort spent packing was well worth it. :)

Trypticon - Decepticon City

Released in 1986/87, Trypticon transforms from dinosaur mode to city mode, and also to battle station mode, although it is seldom seen in the last two alternate modes. It has two other "helpers" in city mode: Brunt, the five-part tank, and Full-Tilt, the transformable rocket car. It is extremely difficult to find Trypticon complete because of the sheer number of small parts that comes with the toy. I bought this toy from an online seller who was kind enough to accept a cash plus toy trade deal, though that meant I had to part with my Hasbro Classics Devastator. Although the box has seen better days (hence the c-8 rating), the toy is complete and in mint condition. It is also very difficult to find Trypticon in the Takara box, so I guess that was the biggest pull factor for me.

It was a roller coaster of emotions at CSC today, where many of the toy stores were having their own versions of the Great Singapore (Toy) Sale. Many TFs items were going at unbelievable prices. I was quite disappointed to have missed out on the one they had last week, and thought the opportunity was gone. But somehow, I clung on to the hope they would continue the sale today. And true to my wishes, they held another today and it was truly a sight to behold, where hordes of toy hunters were buying as if there were some competition to see who could buy the most. I walked away with 3 TFs encores - #5-Ironhide, #6-Ratchet and #8-Jazz at the combined can-you-believe-it price of 60 SGD. I have always wanted to keep an extra set of the encores and it was just as well I got them at below-secondary market prices. Wished I could have bought #7-Skylynx too, which was going at only 50 SGD, but space simply doesn't permit a box of such magnitude to take its position in my room, especially when there is a clone of it already. Also saw reissue God Ginrai going at only 100 SGD, and I'm happy my friend managed to get a piece for himself. That, to me, would have been the buy of the day, except I already owned a piece of it. A good day, nevertheless, for anyone who bothered and bought.

Commemorative Ultra Magnus

Ultra Magnus, which was reissued in 2002 as a Toys "R" Us exclusive in the United States in the first wave of the Commemorative Series, is one of the few toys I owned from Hasbro, and I acquired it through the help of a friend. The story goes this way. My friend had happened to see about 30 or more boxes of Ultra Magnus sold at Carrefour, so he messaged me immediately to ask if I wanted one. At that time, Ultra Magnus was going at 110 SGD in specialised toy stores but the ones he saw was going at the retail price of only 60 SGD. As each customer was limited to only piece, he helped me reserve a piece. The amazing thing was the rate at which the item was sold out; my friend had a quick drink and when he came back, there was only one box left. I guess news travels fast where toy hunting is concerned. Anyway, I'm just glad I managed to secure a piece.

Galvatron and Galvatron II

Galvatron is the reincarnated form of Megatron, who was rescued and re-formated by Unicron after being thrown into space by Starscream (in Transformers : The Movie). In his new body, Megatron's power was increased and he was dubbed "Galvatron". Galvatron transforms into a Cybertronic treaded field artillery unit with an alternate hand-held gun mode. The ones you see in the pictures above are the reissued versions of the original release in 1986/87. In the reissued version (1st picture), Galvatron has been redecoed into a more show-like appearance, being primarily purple instead of the original gray. The same toy was later released as the e-Hobby exclusive Galvatron II (2nd picture).

I bought the reissue two years back from a friend who was willing to sell it at a reduced price. For the e-Hobby exclusive, I remembered it was bought at Falcon during one of its annual sales at its old location. It was going at a really good price, and there were around six pieces. I wished my friend, who was also at the sale, hadn't hesitated in getting it as it is now a rare piece selling at a very good price on the secondary market. Both boxes are in very good condition with minor shelfwear.

Bruticus - Who's the strongest of them all?

Bruticus, which possessed immense strength and can smash metal bridges with a single chop of his hand, is the combined form of the five Combaticons: Team Leader Onslaught, Brawl, Blast Off, Swindle and Vortex. Released in 1986, the Bruticus giftset was only available in Japan and Italy and as with all Scramble City-style combiner teams, his limbs can be rearranged into any slot. This giftset, which I purchased from an online seller, is in excellent shape with a box condition of c-9.5, sharp edges and no flap crease. It is kept in a custom-made acrylic case for extra protection.

The one item I have been waiting for since last week has finally arrived: Shockwave. Released in 1985, Shockwave transforms into a large Cybertronian handgun. He has light and sound electronics activated by his gun-mode trigger and is powered by a 9-volt battery. I bought this item online from an ebay seller two weeks ago and I must admit it was certainly worth the wait when the highly anticipated toy finally arrived this evening, having survived a long flight from Canada. I could hardly contain my excitement as I carefully opened the box, which had the label COLLECTABLE TOY on it, to reveal the gem within. It was truly a sight to behold to see Shockwave neatly packed in the small box inside. The box is definitely in the condition described by the seller, mib c-9 with no flap crease and minor shelfwear.

Browning

Browning transforms into a Browning M1910 pistol. In his realistic pistol mode, he can fire bullets from the muzzle thanks to a spring-loaded assembly attached to his trigger. I deliberated on getting this tiny terror at first, but was eventually tempted by the near perfect condition of the box, with no flap crease and very sharp edges. It is very rare to find Browning in the secondary market now, and as Browning's Japanese ID number comes right after Overlord, it didn't take me long to get him once the opportunity was presented.

God Ginrai giftsets

The first photo shows a reissue of the God Ginrai giftset, released in 2002, with blue eyes for the small Ginrai robot and a slighty different shade of red paint on the cab. The original version was released in 1988. However, there was a case of over production of the reissue and currently, it is still readily available in the secondary market at highly affordable prices. In the same year, Fire Guts God Ginrai (2nd photo), a redeco of the God Ginrai giftset in red and orange, was also released as an eHobby exclusive. It was limited to 1600 pieces. Both pieces were bought separately from online sellers, and I managed to secure Fire Guts at a very good price way below the seller's 'buy it now price' placed on his auction after some negotiation. Both boxes are in good condition with minor shelfwear.

Stealth Bumblebee

Went to the toy bazaar at Takashimaya basement yesterday to see if I could get animated Transformers at discounted rate. I had only wanted to buy megatron as I thought it was one of the nicer ones released in the series so far. When I asked the salesperson, he initially told me that there was a 20% discount for the animated series, but as I was browsing to look for one in a better box condition, he came back and told me the discount applied only to the movie toys. Sigh. In the end, I bought the Stealth Bumblebee instead, which was going at the discounted price of 21.50 SGD. Figured it was a good deal paying this price for a bumblebee even though I'm not a collector of the movie series.

Raiden - The Robot Train

Raiden is the combined form of the six Trainbots: Kaen, Getsuei, Seizan, Shouki, Suiken, and Yukikaze. It was released only in Japan in 1987. For Headmasters, the Trainbots were available individually or in a gift set. It is extremely rare to find Raiden in his gift set box, so when I chanced upon the opportunity to own this rare giftset at a good price, I acted on the advice on my friend and bought it without much hesitation. The box is in very good condition, with sharp edges and no flap creases. It is kept in a custom made acrylic case for extra protection. Another valued addition to my combiners collection.

Overlord - Ambassador of Destruction

Overlord consists of Megajet and Gigatank, and transforms like any Powermaster, in that he is only able to do so when Giga and Mega are fixed in place. Released in 1988, Overlord was initially exclusive to Japan, but was later released in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Overlord is one of the more popular characters in the Masterforce series and is highly sought after by collectors. Although mine came at a hefty price, I thought it was worth the money spent as the box condition was really good. Admittedly, I do have a soft spot for vintages with good box condition.

King Poseidon - King of the Deep Blue Sea

Released in 1988, King Poseidon is one of the most impressive-looking combiners. It is made up of the following seacons; Team Leader Turtler, Overbite, Kraken, Lobclaw, Gulf and Tentakil. The seacons were essentially the last combiner team produced in the G1 line, apart from Dinoking (1989). This combiner is similar to the Hasbro version, which is known as Piranacon. I got King Poseidon from a fellow collector who was letting go of his vintage collection. With the box in such good condition; sharp edges and no flap crease, it was too good an opportunity to pass.

This entry features my latest acquisition: Takara Primus C-00, otherwise known as the creator of all transformers, and whose body forms the planet Cybertron. I have seen this item a few times during my visits to CSC, but has never been tempted to buy it or even considered buying it because of the ridiculous price tags placed on it. I guess it is mainly due to the beautiful box artwork (both front and back) that has seen its value soar, compared to the dull hasbro version of the same item. I got this item from a seller from sgcollect, and I must admit the price is very reasonable in the current market. Although it is not on my wanted list, I still like it a lot. For such a huge box, the condition is very good with sharp edges and no box dents.

This entry features the individual predacons, and a cosy group shot with its combined form, Predaking. Released in 1986, the predacons, consisting of team leader Razorclaw, Rampage, Divebomb, Tantrum and Headstrong, were not only large and colourful robots that converted to fierce animals, they also functioned as a combiner team, merging to form the super warrior Predaking. Rarely would you find combiner team members working together and united in the way the Predacons do, with each member dedicated to the ultimate goal of its combiner; to seek and destroy all that stands in its way. I got the predacons and Predaking separately on the secondary market, and I think they look awesome when displayed as a set.

Lawson Exclusive Gold Bumblebee

A redeco of the Japanese version of the Classic Camaro Bumblebee mold, this toy was exclusively available with the purchase of a ticket for the Transformers movie in Japanese Lawson stores. I got it one year ago from Falcon during the movie craze. There were very limited pieces available (rumoured to be 50) to Singapore and I was very fortunate to land a piece at a reasonable price. I remembered I made the preorder as soon as I saw it in the email sent by Falcon and rushed to collect it immediately after work as it was limited to one piece per customer. It was sold out on the day itself. I am not a collector of the movie line of toys as I dislike the haphazard release of its toys, most of which didn't even appear in the movie and probably never will; however, this is certainly one piece I will treasure a lot.

Kaiyodo Revoltech Ultra Magnus

Reissue vs Original Ultra Magnus

Just went to Falcon Hangar yesterday to collect my preorder for Kaiyodo Revoltech Ultra Magnus. Previously an exclusive which I had acquired at a hefty price, it has been made available again due to Falcon getting new stocks from one of their suppliers. I was a little disappointed at the beginning when I found out that it would be the same item as what I had purchased earlier, but upon comparison with the original piece when I reached home, there was one minor difference in the design on the paper wrapping around the boxes, which came as a pleasant surprise. On the same day, I also added to my vintage collection with the acquisition of D-308 Browning. I will be posting pictures of this toy soon.

Superion - Aerialbots combiner

Superion is the combined form of the Aerialbots, comprising of team leader Silverbolt, Air Raid, Fireflight, Skydive and Slingshot. In his combined form, his battle approach is reduced to two things: destroy the Decepticons and protect the humans. Superion is also a Scramble City-type combiner, meaning his limbs are interchangeable. Superion has very thin thighs, mainly due to Silverbolt, which has rather thin legs, forming its torso. For this combiner, I bought it from a fellow collector even though it is mib, simply because the condition of the box is really good. There is no flap crease and all the edges are sharp with no box dents.

My T.H.S set

I finally managed to complete my Transformer Hybrid Style (THS) set last month, when a visit to Falcon Hangar got me the last item of the set I was missing all along, T.H.S-01 Galaxy Convoy. It was actually a consignment item and after checking that it was within my budget, I promptly bought it. My first item from this set was T.H.S-02 Convoy, which I had bought from Jeff two years back and after I had gotten T.H.S-02B Black Convoy during one of my trips to CSC, I was quite determined to complete the entire set. The cover flaps can actually be lifted to show the intricate parts of the robots, but to prevent shelf wear and dust, I have decided to keep it wrapped in clear plastic.

Digressing a little, I recently bought two sets of the black Detolf display shelves from Ikea when they were having their Labour Day Sale. Each shelf costs only 55 SGD from the usual 99 SGD. It was such a steal that when I arrived at Ikea in the evening, the birch coloured ones were already sold out, with only 9 sets of white and 49 sets of black left. Thanks to my dad's help, we managed to carry them home after much effort. It was indeed Labour Day for us. I am intending to set up the shelves during the upcoming holidays so I can display more toys in them. Will have to do some serious tidying up of my study room to clear space before that though... :)

Black Zarak

I shall feature one of my prized possessions here. Black Zarak is the Japanese-exclusive retool of Scorponok and redecoed in the brilliant colours of black, gold and red/orange. Black Zarak also comes with a new accessory - a red/orange two-piece spear that can be held in robot mode. I have learnt from fellow collectors that Black Zarak is very difficult to find complete, due to many of his accessories suffering from gold plastic syndrome and broken even in mint sealed boxes. This black beauty, which I bought from an online seller, is 100% complete and makes a marvellous addition to my collection. The box condition is really good, considering it is such a big box, and I shall make sure it remains so for a long time to come.

Predaking - The Fearless Decepticon Warrior

Predaking is the ferocious combination of the five Predacons: team leader Razorclaw, Divebomb, Headstrong, Rampage and Tantrum. Of all the combiner toys, Predaking is easily one of the most magnificent looking, however, its arms and legs are not interchangeable, unlike the Scramble City-style toys such as Bruticus and Defensor. In late 2004, Predaking was reissued as a giftset, using metal parts, with pieces that were originally soft plastic in the vintage version now using hard plastic. It was really great news to Transformer collectors who would have baulked at the current market prices of the vintage version. I bought mine from an online buyer, and I distinctly remembered that I kept admiring the beautiful artwork on the box when I reached home after collecting the toy. I still do, and it remains one of my favourite toys, mainly because it was the first combiner I acquired.

My Transformers Book Collection

The Transformers Collection, also known as T/F Collection, was Takara's series of G1 reissues. Each toy is housed inside a "book-box"-style package that opens just like a book, complete with a small booklet containing profiles of the reissued character, a couple of random characters, episodes of the cartoon and a small portion of the Japanese catalogue. In total, twenty one sets have been reissued. Unfortunately, this particular line appears to have been discontinued after Takaratomy launched the encore series, which are essentially reissues of Transformers in G1 boxes. Decepticon Headmasters Junior - Wilder, Bullhorn, Cancer

The Headmaster Juniors are a group of Earth Humans selected by the Autobots and the Decepticons to fight by their side. They use a form of technology called Masterbraces to armor-up their bodies and allow themselves to transform into the heads of transtectors. The Decepticon Headmaster Juniors consisted of Wilder, Bullhorn and Cancer. I got my first Headmaster Junior Wilder at a toy sale organised by Falcon Hangar last year. I was browsing around and happened to pass by a section when I saw four boxes of wilder placed at the counter. Immediately, I took up a box and checked its condition. Just as I was doing this, the remaining three boxes were promptly snapped up by other customers in a flash. Fortunately, I managed to secure the piece I was holding on to, but I had wanted to get a piece for a friend as well. As for Bullhorn and Cancer, I got them from an online seller. All three boxes are in very good condition and still in their bright colours.

Blacker

Blacker, which transforms into a racing buggy with oversized studded tires, was actually the second vintage transformer I acquired. Together with Laster and Braver, these three brainmasters combined to form Road Caesar, a rare non-Scramble City style of combiner. Thanks to a friend, I received information about its availability and was in fact shocked by the quantity available at the shop when I arrived. Needless to say, I took my time to select one with the best possible box condition, and paid a reasonable 150 SGD for it. I shall be keeping a lookout for its buddies, Laster and Braver.

Sixshot - Solo Transformer Assault Group

Sixshot is one of my all time favourite Transformer characters, attributable to his status as a Solo Transformer Assault Group (“S.T.A.G.”), or basically, a one-robot army as he is famed for his near-unique ability to assume six different modes. Released in 1987, Sixshot’s number of alternate modes was unprecedented then, and his instruction leaflet was even sealed shut with a sticker, challenging buyers to figure out all six modes without aid. I have seen the vintage version before but with the reissued sixshot, I figured it's not worth paying so much for the vintage version. It actually took me some time to get the reissued one as the ones I saw were either too expensive or the box conditions were simply not what I wanted. With much luck, I finally chanced upon an misb Sixshot at U-toys during one of my weekend trips to CSC about a year ago selling at 18o SGD. I rate the box at c-9. The box artwork is simply awesome.

My Masterpiece Collection

I started my transformers collection with the masterpiece series two years back, where I bought 2 pieces MP-01 Convoy and MP-04 Convoy with Trailer through a good pal, Jeff. The prices were reasonable back then, and I also managed to secure my MP-02 Ultra Magnus through an online seller at the really good price of 150SGD. It's easily double that now if anyone is planning to get it. Can't remember how I got my first MP-03 Starscream, but I remembered I bought my second piece at China Square Central during one of the sundays flea market, where one of the stallholders was selling at a fantastic price of 100SGD. Unfortunately, MP-04, which was going for only 200SGD at the same stall at that time, was quickly snapped up by another eagle-eyed customer just as I saw it. As for MP-05 Megatron and MP-06 Skywarp, I bought them at my favourite toy shop, The Falcon's Hangar, which doesn't charge sky high prices for their products, so I've almost always bought my stuff from them. I really hope the masterpiece series will continue for a long time to come, although I will soon have to think about storage given the relatively large sizes of the boxes.

Old is Gold...

I have recently acquired a few pieces of vintages, which I really liked a lot, though I must admit vintages nowadays come at a hefty price, in the aftermath of the Transformer movie. And even then, there is the factor of availability. Some of the vintages I have include a mib unused Black Zarak, mib unused Overlord and misb King Poseidon, three highly sought after toys by collectors. And I really like them a lot, especially the Black Zarak. For the smaller vintages, I own the set of Junior Decepticons Headmasters: Wilder, Bullhorn and Cancer. The artwork of the boxes is simply amazing. A personal goal is to collect all the combiners giftsets, though that would require lots of patience for the right deal to come along. Well, at least that is something that will definitely sustain my passion for Transformers for some time to come.

A warm welcome to all reading the opening entry of my blog, which is dedicated to my transformers collection, and updates on my latest buys and craze. For a start, a short intro to how I became so fascinated with transformers. It's actually thanks to a good pal, Jeff, that I was introduced to get my first transformer toys from the Masterpiece series, and I must admit that I have been on a relentless toy hunting trail ever since. I have another friend, Chin Meng, who has been a great pal in helping me keep a lookout for toys I am interested in and who has been a great companion during my toy collection and toy hunting trips. In this blog,I will be focusing on my toy hunting escapades. I will also be posting photos of my latest acquisitions (hopefully on a regular basis). Thanks for viewing. :)
